A four day trip combining wildlife interests with other activities designed to enjoy the best of the local scenery and community in the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains and the Fort Portal region.
Please be at the bar at Red Chilli by 7am at the latest. 7.45 am – Depart Red Chilli Kampala in one of our customized 8 seater 4×4 minibus safari vehicles. Lunch break in Fort Portal followed by a stop at the equator markers on the edge of Queen Elizabeth National Park. 16.45 Arrive at Simba Safari Camp for a leisurely drink and evening meal overlooking the National Park.
8.30 am – Depart for a community walk in the Rwenzori Foothills. This lasts around an hour and takes you through banana and coffee plantations, across a river and to the town of Kagando. The local guide will explain how people live, grow their crops etc. On arrival at Kagando there is a visit to the tomb of three Bakonzo fighters. 11.15 am – Pop in to Simba to pick up a packed lunch before driving to Mweya Boat Launch for a 2 hour cruise along the Kazinga Channel which runs between Lake George and Lake Edward. The Channel is a favourite watering spot for elephants and buffalos.
You can also see crocodiles and hippos plus a large variety of bird life. Although not a game drive as such, on the way to the boat launch you may see elephants and, if you’re very lucky, a leopard. 3.30 pm – Depart Mweya for the Explosion Crater Drive. This part of the park is famous for its spectacular landscape created by past volcanic activity. This 27 km drive takes you high above the park with spectacular views across the plains and, of course, of the many craters themselves, some of which exceed 1km in diameter. There will be many photo opportunities on this part of the trip.
6.30 am – Depart Simba Safari Camp with a packed breakfast and pick up a ranger at the Ugandan Wildlife Authority post. Turn off the main road onto the Kasenyi Plains for a 3 hour game drive. This area of the park is known as a breeding ground for Kob, consequently it attracts many lions! The roof of the minibus will be raised and the ranger will do his best to spot the animals for you. 9.30 am – Return to Simba Safari Camp for showers, rest etc. 12.00 midday – Early lunch 1.30 pm – Depart Simba Safari Camp for Maramagambo Forest Walk. It’s possible to see and hear a variety of primates such as vervets, black and white colobus, baboons, blue monkeys and, if you’re lucky, chimpanzees.
