2 Day Ziwa Rhino and Shoebill Midrange Exclusive Safari

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a collaborative effort between the Rhino Fund Uganda (a Ugandan NGO committed to the restoration of Uganda’s rhinoceros population) and the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

The sanctuary offers a secure place where rhino populations can be expanded by breeding, protected from human and non-human predators and gradually be re-introduced into Uganda’s national parks, while at the same time allowing the public to enjoy these majestic animals, as the project moves forward.  The sanctuary also provides a safe haven for a healthy population of smaller game species, notably the beautiful bush buck and an abundance of wetland birdlife, including the rare and elusive shoebill stork.

This 2 day trip will allow you an afternoon walk in the bush, tracking and observing Uganda’s only White Rhino population as well as the opportunity to experience the wetland wildlife on an early morning canoe safari experience.

Product Description

We have two different accommodation options for this safari. Please specify which option you would prefer when making your reservation:

  • A Luxury Bush Camp operated by White Nile Walking Safaris (Limited period only): The bush camp is set up a short walk away from Amuka Lodge with comfy twin beds (including bedding & towels), hot and cold bucket showers and sturdy weatherproof tents. All meals are included and are freshly prepared in the camp’s bush kitchen. A great experience for those wanting to experience a night under canvas.  Use of the pool at Amuka Safari Lodge is also available.
  • Amuka Safari Lodge is a luxury bush lodge with spacious double or twin en-suite rooms. As with the bush camp option above, all meals on safari are included. This should be the preferred option for those who prefer flushing loos and electric lights.

DAY 1:

9.00      Please be at the Red Chilli reception by 9am at the latest.  Depart in a customised pop-top safari minibus with driver/guide (max 8 passengers per trip).

12:00    Arrive at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary around midday.  Check in to your accommodation and enjoy a leisurely lunch.

14:00    At around 2pm you will set off for your Rhino tracking with an experienced Rhino Fund Uganda ranger. The total tracking time will vary according to where the rhinos are currently situated within the sanctuary but you will be able to enjoy an hour in the close vicinity of the rhinos once found.   After you have finished tracking you will return to your accommodation, where dinner will be served.

DAY 2:

6:00      One of the most sought after birds in Uganda is the Shoebill Stork.  Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary affords a rare opportunity to observe these prehistoric looking birds which nest within their wetland. Water birds are plentiful and this early morning canoe safari is a must for anyone who loves nature or is interested in birding. Your canoe trip should take between 3 to 4 hours.

12.00    Enjoy an early lunch before returning to Kampala. You should be back in Kampala by 16:00, depending on traffic conditions on the day.
