The hottest place to chill in Kampala! We have been catering for independent travellers, families, students, backpackers and volunteers looking for excellent value for money for over 20 years. We have now been 6 years at our fantastic purpose-built site just outside the hustle and bustle of down town Kampala. We are situated right by the shores of Lake Victoria near Port Bell, with beautiful views across the wetlands and over the world’s largest tropical lake. Set in 5 leafy and tranquil acres in one of Kampala’s safest suburbs, we cater for self-campers and also offer dorm beds and private rooms – with or without en suite facilities. We even have a rather lovely fully self-catered flat with private kitchen, bathroom & satellite TV.
We are not a fancy hotel with fluffy dressing gowns, waiters or room service but we do provide really great facilities …and at really great prices:
For only $8 per person, per night, you can pitch your own tent in the mature gardens.
Book a bed in one of our open 6 bed single sex or unisex dormitories (3 bunk beds in each)
We offer private single, double, triple, and family rooms (sleeps 4) with shared bathrooms for $30, $35, $40, and $45 respectively.
For more convenience and comfort we offer single, twin, and triple en suite rooms for $50, $55, and $60 respectively.
One bedroom apartment with a double bedroom, bathroom, sitting room with satellite television and a kitchenette. Sleeps two people comfortably for $75 per night.
By Public Transport:
Catch a minibus taxi from the Old Taxi Park or from Nakawa, heading to Butabika via Luzira/Kirombe or Mutungo/Biina. Get off at Butabika Hospital gates & take the second turning on the right (signposted), before Royal Palms & Gems International School. We are at the bottom of this road (500m from the hospital).
Take Port Bell Road from town & turn left onto Mutungu Tank Rd at the Oryx petrol station in Kitintale (signposted). Continue on Mutungu Tank Hill Rd until you reach the T-junction with Kirombe-Butabika Rd. Turn left and pass Butabika Hospital on the left hand side. Then take the second turning on the right (signposted), before Royal Palms & Gems International School. We are at the bottom of the road (500m from the hospital).
Our home is located right next to the exclusive Royal Palms estate, with shops, market and public transport conveniently within 500m. It is a safe and peaceful area, but still within easy reach of the city. We look forward to welcoming you!
I stayed at Red Chilli Hideaway for a month and a half and enjoyed it. Because of the location its nice and peaceful- an excellent break from the hustle and bustle of downtown Kampala. The room I stayed in was basic but had everything I needed. Two plug-ins for charging, a big ceiling fan and a mosquito net. I chose a room without my own toilet, but the shared bathrooms were nice and cleaned every day, so that was no problem.
They have a restaurant with quite a lot of options both for breakfast lunch and dinner, a pool, bar, and a volleyball court.
The hostel is not in the center of town ( hence the peacefulness), so traveling into city center might take some time- about 30 mins give or take, but they have a free shuttle leaving several times a day!
The staff is helpful and knowledgable and always ready to advise on what to do, see or pay.
In my opinion it’s worth the money, and next time I’m in Uganda, im staying there!
We stayed at red chilli several times when we were in Kampala and it’s a bit like coming home to us.
It’s a relaxed and nice place to hang out after a busy day. Red chilli is also a nice place to chill, swim, or just hang out for a while, it’s my favourite in Uganda.
